Care Philosophy

Our Care Philosophy at La Joya Paediatrics™ (LJP), is to provide a MEDICAL HOME for your family, where your children's' needs are met in a holistic manner, with emphasis on EDUCATION and PREVENTION.

By this we mean that we look after your children, not only when they are sick, but when they are well, through prevention and proactive parenting.

As portrayed in the logo, Crossroads of Development, the philosophy of the practice is to carry your child through the crossroads from infancy through to the end of adolescence.

Learning not Waiting!

La Joya Paediatrics is now fully a 'Learning not Waiting' environment.

What does this mean?

Well it means that while you wait for your appointments, you can listen to educational videos such as 'Love and Logic®' or request newborn information tailored to your needs.

LJP Changes for 2008

There are some big things happening at La Joya Paediatrics for 2008. Due to an increase in the rent at the La Joya Complex, the office will be moving to Curepe in April 2008. The new site is the historic old Warden's Office at 23, Mc Donald St.,on the corner of Phillips St. It is located right opposite the Curepe Pentecostal Church. To see a map of the new office location, just click on the link to the most recent newsletter below.
There will be parking, security systems and lots more room than we presently have at La Joya. We will have an area with networked computers that you can use to look up any pertinent questions you may have regarding your child.

Don't worry, Nemo will of course be making the move with us and we already have the space set aside for him.

Our teens will be happy to know that there will be an area set aside for them to read, use the computer or meet other teens.

Just before we make our move to Curepe, Dr. Thomas will unfortunately be away from office from mid February to the end of March. During this time, the office will be covered by Dr. Dottin, a UK trained specialist who has recently returned to Trinidad.

La Joya Resource Centre

Due to the increase in the rent at La Joya, we have to say goodbye to the Resource Centre from February. The Centre, which started in March 2004, served the community is many ways. The children will remember all our creative camps during the vacation times and parents will remember the Love and Logic parenting classes that helped many of us through our parenting difficulties, as well as Marlene's Weight Loss classes that helped to get people going on the road to making healthier choices.

We are sad to say goodbye to the space, but we will continue our Resource Centre activities that link health, parenting and learning in a different way. Our teen weight loss program, Weigh to Rock will continue through the office and the Hand to Hold sessions will continue in the community .

Did you know that you should not wait until that nasty nail prick to get your tetanus booster?

Tetanus boosters are now given every 10 years according to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

After the 4 to 5 year booster, the next tetanus shot is due around age 15.

Most tetanus vaccines come as dT.

The little 'd' stands for the small amount of diphtheria in the vaccine, since the disease has been occurring in small amounts in the adult population.
