Oct/Dec 2006

Greetings from all of us at La Joya Paediatrics

We are back into the hustle and bustle of school and the traffic seems to be getting worse by the day. Children now have to wake up much earlier to get to school. Some tips for keeping the sanity

          - Get everyone to bed early

          - Healthy breakfast is a MUST. For a great article on the

            importance of breakfast, check out

www.kidshealth.org/kid/nutrition/food/breakfast.html             - Chat and sing in the car...even if you can't hold a tune

What's been happening at La Joya Paediatrics

Thanks to Eastern Properties Ltd, our office has finally been retiled...to all our asthma patients, we are practicing what we preach...Lose the carpet!

Our play area is also going through some new changes. Don't worry, Nemo will be back...and in a new home that gives us more space to recreate our play wall. Look out for some new toys that are inexpensive but provide lots of enjoyment and learning opportunities for your children

-Kaleidoscope - linking science and math - remember our days? Well this simple toy is making a comeback. Kaleidoscopes are good for hours of fun, have a rich history and make great gifts...yes Christmas will soon be here.

It was invented by David Brewster (a Scottish inventor) in 1816 and here is where the word comes from...

      KALOS - beautiful + EIDOS  - form  + SCOPE

-View Master - Another simple toy that continues to stimulate the imagination of our little (and not so little) ones.

Remember that play is children's work! So encourage them to play and learn

Health and Nutrition

We are seeing an increase in children with high BMIs - the body weight relative to their heights. Did you know that putting cereal in your baby's bottle may predispose them to problems with obesity later on? Give them their cereal in a bowl with a spoon once a day, and use high fiber cereals like oats or cream of wheat.

Many of our teens are falling into the overweight category - a troubling trend as increased BMIs are linked to many health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Don't despair, there is help!!

Marlene's Weight Loss Clinic is now being held on Thursday evenings at the Resource Centre and it is a nine-week Life Changing Course. We are encouraging teens to take part.

One teen Jodelle Nicholas has a real success story to tell after taking part in our first session. Check out her story on our teen page of the website www.lajoyaresource.com

Remember that the greatest successes are achieved when the whole family is involved

Remember our Web site

www.lajoyamd.com now has an easy template for making your non urgent appointments. Remember that Saturdays are our busiest days so if you can come during the week, your waiting time will be less. Please remember to call us if you are going to be late or can't make it.

LJP Resource Centre

Our Resource Centre has been a buzz of activity since our July/August camp and we hope to have a camp during the Christmas vacation this year and we look forward to seeing all our young campers who were here before along with some new friends. Keep checking the website for dates for all our activities and we will be sending out email reminders to our patients

Remember to check out the website at www.lajoyaresource.com and if you have anything you would like to see, or any messages to post on the Community Board, just email us at info@lajoyaresource and we will do our best to get it on.

Anyone looking for space to have craft fairs, Christmas get togethers or small cozy concerts, email us or call us at 645-3561. Book early so we can reserve the space. Check our calendar page for available dates

...And last but certainly not least..

We have so much to celebrate at this time, so we would like to wish everyone,
