What's happening at La Joya Paediatrics

Sorry this is coming late but we would like to wish all our patients and families a happy New Year and all of God's blessings for 2006. We are continuing with our focus on education and we are reminding all our patients of our learning not waiting menu. We have lots of up to date information on Health Issues - asthma, allergies etc.; Growth and Development; Parenting - potty training, discipline etc; as well as many other topics. When you are coming for your child's appointments, you can write down any concerns you may have and we will direct you to the information. You can use your waiting time in the office - especially on a Saturday morning - to learn more about your child's health.

Our Friday clinics have been a great success and will continue on the last Friday of every month, from 4-6pm, so remember to ask Ava about them when scheduling your child's appointment.

New at La Joya Paediatrics

Congrats to Dr. Thomas who has successfully completed her recertification exams with the American Academy of Paediatrics. She is now Board Certified until 2012. Thanks for all the support and best wishes and especially thanks for the Christmas lunch, it really helped.

We have a new DVD available for viewing at the office called The Happiest Baby on the Block, by  Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D. It outlines a new way of calming a fussy baby using the 4 S's. Swaddling - wrapping baby snuggly in a blanket; Side - holding baby in a side position almost facing down; Shhh - making a shhing sound in baby's ear and Shake - gently shaking baby. These four S's, when used together have been shown to help calm even the fussiest baby. Some of our mothers have tried it and say it really works! So ask Lisa for more information when you come.

We also have 2 new books available for teens and pre teens called A Changing Me - the Caribbean Girl's Body and Self Book and the Caribbean Boy's Body and Self Book , written by M.L. Cunin. These books are written in language that most children will find easy to read and answers many of the questions they may have but are afraid to ask. The book will be officially launched at the La Joya Paediatric Resource Center some time in March so keep posted and we will let you know the official date. In the meantime ask us about the books which sell for $70.00.

Nemo finds friends at La Joya Paediatrics

For those of you who visit us regularly, you would have seen our expanding aqua home in the office. Thanks to Tony, we now have many of the fish in the Finding Nemo® movie - Nemo, Marlin, Dory, Jaques (the shrimp) as well as some clams. The tank remains a favorite to children and adults alike. The children will also have the opportunity to feed the fish at times so ask Ava about it.
The videos and information on aquatic sea life for all ages as well as the National GeographicT Kids magazines for the young ones are still available under the tank so you can all sit back read and enjoy..
Time to explore!

LJP creates a new mix

La Joya Paediatrics (LJP) takes another turn. The paediatric clinical practice is now fully integrated into La Joya Paediatrics Resource Centre (LJPRC).
What does this mean for your child's health? Well, it means "Learning not Waiting."
That is, while you wait for your appointments, you can listen to educational videos such as "Love and Logic®" or request newborn information tailored to your needs.
Our patients have been listening...and dancing to our newest addition to the learning not waiting menu. We have collaborated with Putumayo®, and we now have a collection of our own for your listening pleasure and we have some that can be purchased. Just ask Ava for more information on this exciting new development.

We have not forgotten you, teens!
We have lots of health information from our conference that will soon be added to our collection and will be available for you to read. If you wish, there is more information in the Resource Center, so just ask us if you wish to go over.

Love and Logic® library

LJPRC now has a Love and Logic® library to support the ongoing Love and Logic Parenting classes.
We also encourage you to use the Reading area of the library as part of our Reach Out and Read Programme.

...And last but certainly not least..

Ava, Lisa and myself would like to wish all our families at La Joya Paediatrics a Happy Eid ul Fitr and Shubh Divali.
