Greetings from all of us
at La Joya Paediatrics
A
very happy New Year to all our families and friends of
La Joya Paediatrics. 2006 was a year of joyful
times...remember the Soca Warriors...as well as a year
of heart ache for many as we faced crisis after crisis
in our society. We now look forward to 2007 with renewed
hope and we continue our work toward creating a better
Trinidad and Tobago for our children.
What's been
happening at La Joya
Paediatrics
Those of you who visited us this
Christmas Season would have seen the return of Nemo in
his new aqua home. The new tank is located against the
corner of the wall so you can now see our whole Nemo
mural that was painted by one of our moms,
Delyse Walker.
In an
effort to improve our clinical performance and focus on
your child's visit, phone calls to the office will be
handled by Ava. Lisa will be available to take calls
after 12md. Urgent matters will be handled accordingly.
Same day appointments are available if your child needs
to come in.
Health and Nutrition
We have been talking to Dr.
Tara Pollonais, a Paediatric Dentist, about
some of the issues she sees concerning the dental health
of children. She has found that during these coming
months, as children prepare for some important and
stressful exams (SEA,CXC and CAPE), there is a falling
off in general dental hygiene. This may lead to an
increase in dental caries and sick visits to the
dentist. So parents, encourage your child to keep up
their regular hygiene routines in order to keep them
well
We are still
seeing a large number of children who are getting
bottles well in to their 2nd year of life. This practice
can lead to a condition called baby bottle tooth
decay. Dr.Pollonais has sent us some
information on preventing early childhood caries:
- Always hold your baby during feedings. Never prop
a bottle
- Stop nursing or remove bottle from baby's mouth if
your baby falls asleep during feeding
- Always put sweet liquids like juice in a cup
- Don't put carbonated beverages in your child's
bottle
- Replace bedtime bottle with a special blanket or
stuffed animal, or special bedtime routine like
singing a song or reading a story
- Don't allow your child to walk around with a
bottle after mealtimes
- Stop bottle feeding at 1 year of life
Prevention
is always 100% better than cure...and less costly, so
try these suggestions for maintaining your child's
dental health.

your waiting time will be less. Please remember to call

it.
LJP Resource
Centre

In 2007, we
continue to focus on the holistic health needs of the
family and we hope to have planned activities for the
family at the Resource Centre.
Marlene's WeightLoss
program continues on a Thursday evening, for
those who wish to lose weight and more importantly, to
maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Gymnastics sessions
are starting now at The La Joya Sporting complex and is
being organized through Lauralee
Braithwaite-Neale. Sessions start on Saturday
6th January and there will be qualified coaches
available. Children are also encouraged to take part in
other activities such as swimming and aerobics (dance
and hip hop), at the sporting complex as part of their
overall fitness. Contact Lauralee at harmony@tstt.net.tt
for any further information
We are trying to start homework
supervision on afternoons at the Resource
Centre for school children. Anyone interested in doing
