June/Sept 2006

Greetings from all of us at La Joya Paediatrics

Holiday time will soon be upon us again and we need to plan for all the free time that our children will soon be having. We need to capitalize on the soca warrior fever that seems to be gripping us all and get our children outside playing football...who knows we may find a new soca warrior among us. Remember that making definite plans for our children's activities will help cut down their idle time watching TV or playing on the computer.

As we continue to struggle with the worldwide increase in childhood obesity, let us also keep an eye on the eating habits of our children during this vacation time. When the whole family is involved in making lifestyle changes, you are more likely to be successful, so get everyone involved. If you have any fun healthy recipes that your kids enjoy, let us know and we can put it on our website.

What's been happening at La Joya Paediatrics

Our Enchanted Tea Evening was a huge success! Everyone enjoyed the food, the entertainment and especially the company. See our picture gallery on www.lajoyaresource.com. The money raised goes towards the purchase of a multi media projector for the Resource Centre for use in our Hand to Hold Project.

Our Hand to Hold initiative is part of our community outreach program and involves the invitation of school children (primary and secondary-public and private) to the Resource Centre for interactive sessions.

These sessions are aimed at fostering health promotion, self-concept building and promotion of literacy, by engaging them in interactive sessions with a Paediatrician and Nurse Educator in a multimedia-rich, child focused environment with links to art, music and technology.

We have had two sessions with children from Curepe Junior Secondary with the last one being done by Tony Fraser, journalist, with a focus on the impact of the media on our young people. The students enjoyed the sessions thoroughly and are looking forward to future sessions with us.

New at La Joya Paediatrics

Marlene's Weight Loss Clinic comes to La Joya. Classes start July 13th (Registration) 7.00 - 8.30pm. See website for details.

Those of you who have visited us recently will have noticed our new water cooler. It was a gift from Johnson and Johnson has certainly been a hit with the children. Remember, 8 glasses of water a day is the recommended intake so feel free to take a cup when you come in.

Remember our Web site

www.lajoyamd.com has been redone and it now has an easy template for making your appointments. Remember that Saturdays are our busiest days so if you can come during the week, your waiting time will be less. The visit actually starts with Lisa, our nurse, taking a history and weighing your child. Please remember to call us if you are going to be late or can't make it.

LJP Resource Centre

We now have 10 new networked computers at the

Resource Centre. The computers will be used a retraining program through the Ministry of Tertiary Education, but they can also be available at a small fee for patients and families who wish to research topics on health and learning.

Our Vacation camp is back. D'Kinetic Zone July vacation camp will take place from July 10th to 21st and is open to any child between the ages of 6-12years. Look out for new activities such as  Calligraphy 101, Chef's Day out and Dance Aerobics; as well as our old favorites. Check the website for more information or call Ava at 645-3561.

We will also be having sessions for the teens in computer literacy, multimedia skills, and in an innovative program called Media Smart Youth. Check the website for more information.

www.lajoyaresource.com has also been redone so check it out. There is a calendar that tells you all that is happening at the Resource Centre, so if you need to book it for an event, you can check out which date is available. The forms to book the Centre are also on line so just fill them out and send it in. There is now a Community Notice board in the Community Zone page. You can post comments, ideas, items for sale...any information you want to get out, just send it in to us at info@lajoyaresource.com.

...And last but certainly not least..

Congratulations to all our children who got their SEA results. We wish you the best in your new schools and the start of a whole new journey.

Remember, your child's annual visits until age 18 years are important for prevention

LJP family in the news

The La Joya Resource Centre recently hosted a launch of 3 new books written by Marina Cunin. A Social Studies book called The Story of...Social Studies for Schools as well as A Changing Me - The Caribbean Girl's Body and Self Book and The Caribbean Boy's Body and Self Book.

The launch was attended by our acting President, Dr. Linda Baboolal.

The afternoon started with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Mikhail Gibbings on the pan. Ineka Valere-Grimes gave her thoughts on the book from a girl's perspective and Christian Roberts gave his thoughts from a boy's perspective.

Congrats on a job well done!
